National Regulations Governing Labels:
In the United States the Authority responsible for industrial labeling of hazardous chemical substances is the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Hazardous chemical substances in a industrial setting must be labeled according to Hazard Communication Standard (CFR29 1910.1200) – Appendix C under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (OSH Act).
Additional Regulations:
In California Proposition 65 “Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986” requires that you determine whether any of the hazardous chemicals within a chemical formula are subject to Proposition 65 requirements.
GHS Implementation Status:
The new Hazard Communication Standard (Hazcom 2012) will bring the US more in line with the UN GHS based system. There is currently a transition period from 2013 to 2016 for all chemical manufacturers, importers, distributors and all employers to conform to the new standard. By June 1st, 2016 everyone must comply with the modified provisions of the final rule.
