Mercury is added to Canada’s Export Control List

Canada’s government is ordering an amendment of schedule 3 of the Environmental Protection Act. The amendment will require all open mixtures that contain a significant amount of Mercury.

The order will add all mixtures that contain 95% of elemental mercury to Canada’s Export Control List (ECL). The ECL is a list of substances that have controlled export, because they are either prohibited or restricted in Canada.

Currently in Canada, there are no measures that both control or prohibit the export of elemental mercury, except when the mixture is in hazardous recyclable material.
