Any chemical product for sale in Canada through a retail store must meet the requirements of the Consumer Chemicals and Containers Regulations, 2001 (CCCR, 2001). A product may fall into multiple categories. The final classification of the product dictates hazard statements required on the label, whether or not a child-resistant container is required, or in extreme cases, prohibition of sale.

At any time, Health Canada can request documentation of the decisions made regarding classification of a product. The responsible party (the manufacturer if manufactured in Canada, the importer otherwise) is given a time limit of 15 calendar days to provide requested documentation to a Health Canada inspector.
