Japan’s Chemical Update

The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and Ministry of Environment, are working together to review the country’s chemicals management legislation, known as the Chemical Substances Control Law (CSCL).

The legislation will set an agenda and make changes to the current risk assessment structure, in hopes to meet the 2020 goal that was set by the world Summit sustainable development.

This agenda includes:

    • Amending requirements for notification systems for the small amounts of chemical substances;

    • Accelerating the process of screening tests and risk managements; and

    • The way chemicals that are very highly hazardous are managed.

The assessment of the procedures and legislation will be introduced through an amendment in the year of 2017/2018.
