FTC – Green Guides

On December 14th, 2022, the U.S Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced that it was interested in potentially updating their guidance on environmental marketing claims. Such guidance is currently in the ‘Green Guides’ which provides information to ensure labels present accurate claims to consumers and a fair playing field across industry. The commission has stated this update is sought after to keep up with current consumer demand. The last time the Green Guides were revised by the FTC was in 2012.

Beyond just general issues on which the public can submit feedback, the FTC is specifically looking for opinions on specific claims such as carbon offsets and climate change, compostable, degradable, ozone-safe/ozone-friendly, recyclable, recycled content, energy use/energy efficiency, organic, and sustainable guidance.

The FTC is seeking comments for 60 days. Giving consumers and industry until February 21, 2023, to send in their ideas.
