Bill C-31 : GHS Implementation in Canada

This news update on Bill C-31 is brought to you by Health Canada.

On March 28, 2014, as part of Economic Action Plan 2014, the Government of Canada introduced new legislation (Bill C-31) seeking amendments to the Hazardous Products Act in order to implement the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) for workplace chemicals in Canada.

On June 19, 2014, Bill C-31 was granted Royal Assent.

This important milestone in the implementation of the GHS enables the Minister of Health to publish proposed changes to the Controlled Products Regulations, to be renamed the Hazardous Products Regulations, in the Canada Gazette, Part I.  This publication will provide another opportunity to comment on Health Canada’s proposed regulations.

Once the regulatory process is complete, Canada will implement the GHS for workplace chemicals.

Please note that Health Canada will inform WHMIS News subscribers when the proposed regulations are published in the Canada Gazette, Part I, which is expected to occur during summer 2014.
