Australia’s Industrial Chemicals Bill
Australia’s Industrial Chemicals Bill 2017, is currently under first reading in the House of Representatives.
Replacing the existing National Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme (Nicnas), the Australian Chemicals Introduction Scheme (AICS) will help to establish a new legal framework regarding the regulation of chemicals used in Australian Industries. The aim of the Industrial Chemicals Bill 2017 is to create and motivate industries to move away from the higher risk chemicals, by reducing the regulatory requirements on the chemicals that are noted as low risk. It will also create changes to the confidentiality arrangements, which includes an introduction of masked chemical names.
Although, now in the first reading, the Bill will need to go to a third reading if it is amended. Once the final Bill is agreed upon by both the Senate and House of Representatives, it will go to the Governor General.
