What is the Toxic Release Inventory?
The US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Toxic Release Inventory (TRI), is program that provides information about certain chemicals that pose a threat to both human health and the environment. Many U.S facilities that are in different industry sectors are now required to report how much chemical is released into the environment or how it is managed through recycling.
Information that is collected from the facilities is then released to the TRI, which helps companies, government agencies, and the public make informed decisions about the chemicals they are using.
The TRI’s mission is to:
– Collect, manage and promote the use of TRI data;
– Create regulations, guidance and policies;
– Help to inform the public about the chemicals on the TRI and the health and environmental risks that come with them; and
– Assists government agencies.
The TRI is a program that follows the “A Right to Know, A Basis to Act” slogan that will allow the citizens of the U.S to better understand the possible pollutions that are both in and around their communities.
